One of the main reasons it is so little known is that, unless you have a private jet, the only way you can access Rocky Point is via automobile through the border entrance in tiny Lukeville, Arizona. Once in Mexico, a short drive through the town of Sonoita, Sonora, will lead you to a four lane highway that, sixty miles later, leads directly into Rocky Point.

Why is Rocky Point a place that attracts people who want to ride their quads? The sand dunes northwest of town near Cholla Bay are some of the most challenging on the North American continent.

Keep in mind that riding any vehicle on the beach is no longer legal in and around Rocky Point (incl Sandy Beach and Las Conchas). If you do and are caught by the police, you will get fined and there have even been reports of ATV confiscations.

There is, however, plenty of quad riding behind the beaches at Las Conchas, Sandy Beach, Cholla Bay, Playa Encanto, etc.

One of the most popular places to ride is known as Competition Hill. It is located next to Cholla Bay. Basically it is a 30° sloped, 300 foot long sandy hill. All types of vehicles can be seen going up this challenging hill at all times of the day and night.

More About Rocky Point

It seems that most tourists that visit Rocky Point are from Arizona or southern California, not surprising since driving is the only affordable way to get there. The town is nestled on the shores of the Sea of Cortez, and attracts thousands every year to its beautiful beaches.

The development boom hit the town beginning in the early to mid-90s. Before then, there were a few hotels, mostly in the urban center of town. At that point Rocky Point mainly attracted people with RVs who would pull them into town and park and camp right on the beach. Some adventurous types would do the same thing without an RV - they would simply fall asleep in the back seats of their cars - a nice weekend on the beach was worth the hassle of the sleeping arrangements.

Nowadays there are many resort hotels along the beaches offering just about any amenity you could think of. Although that means there is less beach space to camp on, a few RVers are still able find spots right on the water like before.

Even if sand dunes aren’t your thing, the section of town called Cholla Bay is a sight to be seen. Settled by expatriate Americans, Cholla Bay features homes and cottages, small grocery stores, and restaurants and bars. There is even an outdoor cantina along the Cholla lagoon that seems like something out of a Hemingway novel.

Swimming, scuba diving, fishing, and even whale watching are all at your disposal in Rocky Point.

The 4 Steps are: Try First, Consider Used, Get Training, and Read.

1. Try First - You should ride someone else’s ATV before purchasing your own so you can see if you really like it and find what size ATV is right for you. They are not a ‘one size fits all’ type of vehicle. For example if you have a boy who weighs about 80 lbs you’ll want to put him in something like a 440-600 cc ATV vehicle. This is so you don’t put him on an ATV that has more power then he can safely handle.
2. Consider Used - If you are a beginner with ATVs it’s usually best to start with a used model. This is because as you become more used to the sport you no doubt will be talking to others who have different models and you’re likely to find yourself always wanting the latest and greatest machine!
3. Get Training - When you get your first ATV it would be wise to take a safety course so that you can learn the best way to protect yourself as many people are injured or killed every year in ATV accidents. Many of these could be avoided if proper precautions had been taken.
4. Read - The next thing you’ll want to do is read the owner’s manual that came with your ATV. Each ATV is different, so you need to know what all the parts and labels are for. You should even take the manual with you when you take the ATV out on the trail, as you never know when it may come in handy. If you bought a used ATV and you didn’t’ get owner’s manual with it, you can acquire a copy of it by writing down the serial number of your model and taking it to a ATV dealer.

Now you’re ready to go out and learn how to handle your ATV, as that’s the only way you’ll really learn to drive it. You’ll want to go with an experienced ATV rider and be sure you have permission or are allowed to ride wherever you choose for your outing.

By following these simple guidelines you’ll soon be experiencing the thrill and excitement of driving an ATV. Just remember to take your time and master the art of driving the ATV safely while still having fun in the process!

The first ever ATVs, which were designed with six wheels, were introduced to the public in the 1950s. However, Honda improved the early models by producing the first three-wheel all-terrain vehicle. It instantly became famous when it was publicly displayed in the 1971 James Bond Movie – Diamond’s are forever.

The History Of ATVs

After the release of the three-wheel ATVs, various models were produced for recreational use. These improved models offered big balloon tires without mechanical suspension. It was only in the early 1980s that lower tires with suspension were introduced.

The popularity of the ATV was due to its ability to pass anywhere on terrain, which other kinds of vehicles cannot cross. These all-terrain vehicles instantly became a hit with Canadian and US hunters.

Aside from recreational use, sport models of ATV became popular when Honda released the 1981 Honda ATC250R with an impressive engine placement, full suspension, 5-speed transmission and stunning design.

When it comes to four-wheel models, Suzuki develops high-performance all-terrain vehicles. Since the company introduced the very first ATV for beginners in 1983, it continuously produced a variety of 4-wheel ATVs for both beginners and professional riders. Other leaders in ATV production include Yamaha and Kawasaki.

In the 1980s, a variety of safety issues were raised regarding the three-wheel all-terrain vehicles. Because of this, all manufacturers of ATVs ended the production of 3-wheel and switched to 4-wheel models. Six-wheel models are also available. However, these all-terrain vehicles contain a small, dump bed and additional set of wheels that increases load capacity.

Today, you can find all-terrain vehicle models for both utility and sport markets. Utility ATV models are bigger, 4-wheeled vehicles with speeds of up to 65 miles per hour and have the capability of towing small trailers or dragging small loads on racks or dump beds. On the other hand, sport all-terrain vehicles are designed with 2-wheel drive and a manual transmission, and a lighter, smaller design that can run at 90 miles per hour.
